Moving into second place on the ladder after taking care of both Tasmanian teams, Nunawading were paced by two impressive performances from Izzy Chilcott as she earned the Round 9 Player of the Week award.
The Spectres guard averaged 21.5 points while shooting 62% from the field as she led her team to victory against Hobart and Launceston, extending Nunawading’s winning streak to four in the process.
On Friday night on the road, Chilcott helped the Spectres get the jump against the Chargers as she scored eight points in the opening frame.
That gave them a four-point edge at quarter-time and involved a three-point play as well as her only three-pointer of the game.
Nunawading extended the margin at every break and then Chilcott finished the home side off by scoring eight of her team’s last eight points, finishing with 20 on an efficient 7-14 shooting while also knocking down a perfect 5-5 from the free-throw line.
Chilcott was also impressive at the rim, pulling down an equal team-high nine rebounds including three offensive boards which led to seven Spectres points in the 84-66 victory.
On Sunday, Nunawading returned home to host Launceston who were on a six-game winning streak heading into the contest.
The Spectres put in another clinical performance though, increasing their lead at every break to eventually succeed 79-59 and Chilcott again could not be impeded, shooting 11-15 from the field for a team-high 23 points.
She was hot from the opening tip, scoring six of the Spectres’ first eight points and she went on to hit only two of her baskets from outside the paint as Launceston were unable to stop her penetration.
With 15 points to half-time, Chilcott helped the home side gain the ascendancy and she then put the game to bed with eight more points in the third term.
Heading into the mid-season break as the second hottest team in the league behind Bendigo, Nunawading will be aiming to carry that momentum into the second half of the year and reach the playoffs for an eighth straight year.
