Backing up his June Player of the Month award, Tre Nichols has led the Hobart Chargers to a sweep of Round 13 to claim Player of the Week honours as well.
Averaging 23.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, four assists and 3.5 steals in wins over Diamond Valley and Albury/Wodonga, Nichols has also helped the Chargers move into second spot on the ladder with four wins in a row.
Arguably the strongest team at home so far this season, Hobart still needed to prove themselves on the road but coming up against the Eagles and Bandits, two teams fighting for their playoff lives, offered the perfect opportunity.
Nichols set the tone in the opening quarter against Diamond Valley with 12 points while he was just as damaging at the defensive end with two steals.
The point guard then scored seven more points in the second term as Hobart went up 17 at half-time.
They cruised for the rest of the game, eventually prevailing by 13 as Nichols finished with 26 points on 9-19 shooting, three assists and four steals.
The following night against Albury/Wodonga, Nichols took on the veteran back court of Jack Duck and Deba George.
He torched them though, helping to restrict their influence to just 16 points on 7-27 shooting and ten turnovers while Nichols went close to a triple-double with 21 points, eight boards, seven assists and three steals.
His three offensive boards led to four of Hobart’s six second chance points while his three steals also contributed to the Chargers’ 21-15 edge in points off turnovers.
The Chargers now face another double-header on the road in Round 14 with their playoff position looking strong but still not quite secured.
Tre Nichols Round 13 Stats: Averaging 23.5 points on 15-34 (44%) shooting including 14-17 (82%) free-throw shooting, 4.5 rebounds (two offensive), four assists and 3.5 steals per game.
