Three straight losses to open the 2018 season was an ominous sign for the Melbourne Tigers but they have raced into the top eight on the back of four consecutive wins, capped by a Tom Wilson-led victory over the Bendigo Braves in Round 6.

Wilson has earned the Player of the Week award after recording 28 points, eight rebounds and seven assists while playing every minute of an 84-74 win against the Braves, a team that had gone through April undefeated.

His relentless attack on the basket resulted in 15 free-throw attempts, 13 of which he knocked down and that enabled him to hit just six field goals for his 28 points.

Wilson was effective from the opening tip, scoring or assisting on Melbourne’s first five points and he had a direct hand in 13 of the Tigers’ 20 points for the opening term.

He had another three assists in the second term, taking his tally to seven by half-time and with five rebounds as well, Wilson was on his way to a triple-double at the main break.

Melbourne only owned a five-point edge entering the third quarter but Wilson began the term with a three-pointer and from there, the floodgates opened.

He had 15 points for the quarter, nine of which came from beyond the arc, almost out-scoring Bendigo by himself as the Tigers gained an insurmountable lead with a 31-16 period.

That saw the home side take their foot off the pedal slightly and the Braves responded with a 14-0 run in the last quarter but Wilson was able to steady the ship with four late free-throws to secure the double-digit win.

The point guard now leads the team for points (23.9) per game, assists (4.3), field goal makes, three-point makes, free-throw makes and is second for rebounds with 8.1.

Tom Wilson Round 6 Stats: 28 points on 6-13 shooting and 13-15 free-throw shooting, eight rebounds and seven assists in 40 minutes.
