In a victory over Albury/Wodonga on Friday night, the Mt. Gambier Pioneers extended their unbeaten record at home to 11-0, officially secured top spot in the East Conference and star import Daniel Alexander earned himself Player of the Week to cap off a spectacular weekend.
Alexander was imposing at both ends of the court against the Bandits, recording 21 points on 50% shooting with seven rebounds, six assists and three blocks.
In the face of a slow start, the forward got the crowd on their feet as he contributed six of Mt. Gambier’s first eight points via assists or his own hand with two highlight dunks.
Albury/Wodonga stuck with the home team through the first half and only found themselves trailing by a basket at the main break courtesy of a quick run from Alexander near the end of the second term.
After making one free throw, Alexander missed the second but an offensive rebound from Brad Hill set up Alexander for a three as he tallied four points in just three seconds.
Out of half-time, the Pioneers began to pull away as Alexander added another seven points for the period, including a second three-pointer, hurting Albury/Wodonga both inside and outside the paint.
He was then quieter in the final quarter but with all the momentum, the Pioneers ran out comfortable winners on the back of a 56-37 second half.
Fitting in perfectly to the Mt. Gambier system, Alexander continues to play his role every week and his consistency looks to have the Pioneers primed for an astounding fifth straight Grand Final appearance and potentially a third Championship in four years.
Daniel Alexander Round 16 Stats: 21 points on 7-14 shooting including 2-6 from three-point range, seven rebounds (two offensive), six assists and three blocks.
