Power forward Ray Turner has been confirmed today as the latest addition to the Bendigo Bank Braves already strong 2018 roster.
Hailing from Houston, Texas, Turner spent 2017 on the Australian West Coast playing for the Willeton Tigers in the SBL. After a season in Japan in 2015 where Turner averaged 15.7 points, 10 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 1.2 steals and 1 block per game with the Akita Nothern Happinets, Turner signed with the Rockhampton Rockets for a second stint – he’d previously played with them in 2014, helping them to first spot on the ladder and taking out back-to-back championships during a season where he averaged over 20 points, took out game 2 MVP and was subsequently named in the QBL All-Stars.
With international experience in the NBA, Asia and multiple Australian MVP accolades, Turner is imposing at 6’9 and will bring strong attack to the Braves forward line. Head coach Ben Harvey is excited with the signing, citing Turner as “an exciting powerhouse, a dominant foreman who will be a real leader in our front court”, Harvey also noted Turner’s experience in Australia as giving him “an understanding of the sport culture and the importance of strong friendships on and off the court.”
Turner is excited to be drafted to the SEABL having not previously lived in Victoria, lured by Harvey’s commitment to putting together a roster that can demonstrate values of leadership and passion on the court and in the community. Ray will arrive in March prior to the season commencing in April.
