The Nunawading Spectres have received a boost to their championship pursuit with all-time SEABL assists leader Shane McDonald confirming he will return for another leading the senior men’s program.

Looking ahead to a 13th season and 12th with the Spectres, McDonald was insistent on his desire to taste championship success once more.

“The fire still burns to compete at a high level and achieve the ultimate on court success alongside a great group of teammates and coaching staff.”

“It’s always an honour for me to represent the Nunawading Spectres and I’m excited to continue my journey for another season.”

McDonald passed his way into SEABL history in Nunawading’s August 5 home win over the Canberra Gunners, the playmaker overtaking Ben Harvey as the league’s all-time assists leader with 1,959 (1,990 at season end). With another 20-plus SEABL games ahead, the Spectres’ guard is sure to entrench himself in further into the record books.

“The Nunawading Spectres have a rich history, the administrative staff along with all the volunteers involved with the club are doing a fantastic job of creating an infectious buzz around the stadium, that’s a real motivating factor to be involved and build upon the legacy of the club. I’m looking forward to getting to back to work with my teammates later in the year in preparation for a successful season.”

Currently sitting on 329 games, should McDonald successfully lead his Spectres back to the post-season, he would be on track to play his 350th SEABL game in a new look structure that has removed conferences and reduced the number of regular season games.

Dave Biwer who was last week announced as the Head Coach of Australia’s FIBA 3×3 team to contest the Asia Cup was also thrilled to have his floor general back for another season.

“When you’re lucky enough to find a player, a leader and a guy the calibre of Shane, you do what you can to keep him.”

“He makes his team mates better and his coach better. I can’t wait to see what he brings this year as he just keeps pushing himself to be better. I love that he’s on our side.”

McDonald joins his backcourt partner Tom Wright as confirmed signings for the Nunawading Spectres men’s team ahead of the teams’ pre-season activity. Further signings are expected to be announced by Nunawading Basketball shortly.
